Savory Hamantaschen

I am a little late in posting this, but somehow Purim snuck up on me! I brought these delicious savory hamantaschen to a Purim gathering last weekend and they were a huge hit.  Purim is a Jewish festival held in the Spring to celebrate the salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia.  It is one of the most joyous and raucous holidays during the Jewish year.  People dress up in costumes and eat hamantaschen, a triangular-shaped pastry filled with fruit.  It is named after Haman, the villain who plotted to massacre the Jews during the time when the holiday is commemorated.

These savory hamantaschen are a riff on the traditional sweet cookies made by Jewish families each Purim.  I enjoy an apricot hamantaschen as much as the next Jew, but wanted to change things up and go savory this year.  As I mentioned above, I got a bit behind in my planning and didn’t have time to develop a savory dough recipe.  Puff pastry is one of my favorite doughs to play with so I decided to give them a try with hamantaschen.  The results were fabulous, if I do say so myself!  And so easy!!!

These savory hamantaschen cook in just 10 minutes, and use only 2 ingredients!  I made things even simpler by using a jarred tapenade, (thank you, Trader Joe’s), but you could certainly make your own.  You have to be careful not to overfill the pastries or they won’t hold their shape.  You also want to make sure your filling isn’t too oily, which can also result in shape formation challenges. I went with an olive filling because I wanted a salty taste profile in this savory hamantaschen version. I think it would also be fun to try other tapenades and fillings, (Trader Joe’s has so many to choose from), but the briny flavor of the olives was a great choice for this tasty snack.

There are lots of ways to get your kids involved in making these too.  After all, Purim is a family affair.  They can roll out the dough, cut it into circles, as well as scoop the filling, and fold the dough into triangles. I suggest making a family assembly line for each job and you can make a couple of batches of these in no time!

I hope you enjoy these savory hamantaschen. They make a great snack, appetizer or side dish.  I recommend serving them immediately.  If you have leftovers, (doubtful, at least in my house!), you can refrigerate and reheat them in the oven for 5 minutes at 350 degrees.

Ingredients
  1. 1 package of vegan puff pastry dough (such as Aussie)
  2. 1 jar of olive tapenade (such as Trader Joe's)
Instructions
  1. 1. Thaw dough on counter top for 45 minutes.
  2. 2. When defrosted, roll out until as thin as you can get it. Using a circle cutter, create 2 inch circles in the dough. Place on a greased cookie sheet. Continue to roll out the scraps and cut more circles.
  3. 3. Spoon 1-2 teaspoons of tapenade into the center of each circle.
  4. 4. Pinch the sides of the dough together to form a triangle, leaving a slight opening for the tapenade to show through.
  5. 5. Bake for at 400 degrees for 10 minutes.
