Halloween is a kid’s dream come true (bags of free candy), and mom’s worst nightmare! As a vegan parent, I came to dread Halloween even more because half the candy my kids came home with contained milk, gelatin, and carmine. Aside from all that, you’ve got the added dyes and ingredients you can’t even pronounce. It stinks being the big, bad witch who picks through her kids’ candy bags, taking out pieces saying, “You can’t eat that.”
Healthier Halloween Candy
Many of the Halloween candy favorites don’t pass the vegan test. Candy corn contains gelatin, Junior Mints contain carmine and gelatin, and almost anything made featuring marshmallows contains gelatin. My old favorites, Peanut M&Ms have milk, as do the classic Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Wouldn’t it be great to have options for vegan friendly, healthier Halloween candy that we can feel good about indulging in during the holiday? I did my research and some taste testing (it’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it!) to find healthier Halloween candy to eat this year. I searched specialty candy stores, online retailers, and regular store brands to compile a list of go-to healthier Halloween candy. I have that list for you below, as well as a free downloadable go-to shopping list.
